Warzone 2100 GPL Project Mission Statement

Abstract.

The "Mission Statement" (this document) defines the long term purposes and goals, that is the intention of the Warzone Development Project. To use a metaphor; the mission statement is the compass that help us steer the ship we call

Prelude.

Ok.... Your, chomping at the bit cause your a Warzone 2100 fanatic, you've heard the game source has been released, you've heard about our community & your thinking you'd like to get involved. So far, so good, we're glad your here & want to give you a hearty welcome. But before we go any further let us tell you briefly what our unifying vision is. Our intentions are not to modify the source for the purpose of making a mod or changing the game. Not a single part of the game will be changed by manipulating the source. Let's clarify that a bit more. The initial goal for the source will not (and ought not to) be for the purpose of changing the game play; its campaigns, skirmish play, rules or procedures. We will NOT be editing the source so that we can add new bodies, sound effects, campaigns, maps, research technology, or rules.

Goals.

Our initial purpose for obtaining the source and modifying it is as follows:

  1. Open-up Warzone 2100's internally hard-coded limitations

  2. Make warzone available for a variety of operating platforms

  3. Redesign Warzone 2100 to be very mod friendly by implementing the following:

    • Externalizing as much of Warzone 2100's internal resources as possible

    • Redesigning how Warzone 2100 imports and parses these files

    • Updating Warzone 2100's .wdg framework

    • Developing new tools to allow manipulation of said framework and their output files (.wdg, .wzw)

  4. Create a new and more versatile graphics engine that will:

    • Be supportable on multiple platforms

    • Have higher resolution graphics by default

    • Greater vertex, poly, color count, and floating point precision in game meshes

    • Versatile particle systems

  5. Support new versions developed by us; and,

  6. Spearhead the development project

Expressed Mission.

We want to enhance the physical heart of warzone by researching, refactorizing and modernizing the source code that is given, and allow it to support the rich array of game play improving concepts, that have been suppressed since the original release in 1999.

Sincerely.

The Warzone 2100 GPL Development Team and the Warzone 2100 Game Community.
